to what people are expecting from the first lady michelle obama's speech tonight. >> look, that is part of the reason for the excitement because first of all, have you these people and the configuration as you can see behind me, i'm above the podium which is a really great vantage point. as you can see, people are -- very, few people, very few delegations are actually on the floor. it is a bowl. they are up and around on the sides. that is, i think, making it sound a lot larger, louder, than it actually might be. it is very loud. they are very excited and they are not all here yet. there are a lot of empty seats. typically people are at dinner now but will be here in time for the keynote address. people are excited to hear castro the keynote speaker, but principally this is michelle obama's night. she is already throughout the campaign. they sent sought an e-mail a half hour ago asking people to text and send in $3 donations in advance of her speech. she told ryan seacrest today on his radio show she had not watched ann romney's speech and came here briefly to look at the stage and look

it the walkthrough. they get to practice a bit on the the teleprompter. you see that to the side of michelle obama. reading off of a teleprompter is an unnatural act. it's not easy to do. you have to move your head back and forth and keep following along and engage the audience at the same time, which is not easy, and engage the television audience. she's getting applause right now. >> and she's practicing a little bit. as important as the reception she gets for the 20,000 or 25,000 delegates and guests inside the arena, what's sho much more important is the reception sh gets from the 40 or 50 million viewers out there, many of them still undecided. >> and i think the bar is set pretty high for her. she now has this many years later quite a bit of public speaking experience. she tends to do pretty well, i think you'll agree, when she's speaking at events. large events, small events. thinks going to be one of the speeches most anticipated throughout this entire week. >> and ann romney gave a good speech in tampa. >> both will reach out to the all important women voters. president obama has a dozen

. there is a quotation where he talks about michele obama doesn't like hillary clinton and referred tow her as a snake in the past. just remember they don't like each other. >> gretchen: we are hours away from the dnc. and there is a look at who will be center stage to make the case for the president. >> for a lot of people first lady michele obama will be the highlighted speaker but the mayor of san antonio will deliver the key note tonight. mrs. -- the first lady toured the stage and getting familiar with the hall. the audience mostly workers and many of whom are still arriving and many were delayed by the thunderstorms. president obama toured some of the damage boy louisiana. consoling the victims and thanking the first responders. he celebrated labor day and aiming to block mitt romney's road to the white house. >> it is working people like you who have to lay the cornerstones. things that people take for granted and were not always there. 40 hour workweek. weekends, paid leave, pensions, the minimum wage, health care, social security, and medicare. >> here in north carolina paul ryan is aiming to

, first lady michelle obama here this afternoon during "studio b" checking out the stage. former president bill clinton set to peek wednesday night and then thursday, the whole thing moves to bank of america stadium for president obama's acceptance speech. ed state yum does not have a dome. pretty good chance of thunderstorms. mike emanuel is here in charlotte. pretty good reason to worry about the weather based on the deluge we had this afternoon. >> that's right, shep. we have had really big thunderstorms in recent days, including a doosie today at an outdoor festival for delegates and for the public. weather clearly was a factor. in fact, north carolina's own james taylor, the headliner at an event this afternoon was playing and trying to get through the driving rain, did his very best to try to power through and instruments. in driving rain with thunder and lightning the plug was eventually pulled on his show. obviously it would be a much bigger deal if such a weather factor happened during the president's speech, shep. >> shepard: sure it would. he has seen fire and rain and sunny day
